About

Hello!

Me: The programmer

I’m a developer who loves to use computers to create new things, solve problems, and generally make the world a better place.

After 20 years of professional software development, the way coding and computing in general have changed over the years will never cease to amaze me. The depth and breadth of the field is always increasing as does developer productivity. It is such a wonderful thing to work in a field where your tools, resources, and capabilities advance so rapidly.

I love trying out new developer tools and programming languages. Modern languages are extraordinary: C#, Kotlin, and Rust are my current favorites as someone who has found his niche in cloud back-end development. I still enjoy writing Go and Python as well and need to spend more time with Typescript. I like containers, “serverless”, and managed services but abhor dogmatic devotion to any technology.

I am incredibly excited about the strides being made in ML / AI, particularly recent advancements in LLMs and diffusion models. I’ve completed the excellent FastAI course in Deep Learning and lead a few PoCs professionally but would love an opportunity to grow in this area.

Things I care about

So many of the advancements in DX that make working in software an ever-improving joy are done in the open by millions of open-source contributors. The open-source revolution that started with GNU and Linux is one of the greatest achievements in computing; mobile and cloud computing are only possible because of freely shared code increasing an individual’s software creation capabilities by orders of magnitude. I have long been a beneficiary of this and have not given enough of my own code back to the community in return. I aim to rectify that both personally and professionally.

I strive to work for a company that values transparency, growth, and has a culture of engineering excellence.

Me: The Other

I love being outdoors on a mountain bike, preferably on some feature filled flow-line in Santa Cruz or Nevada City if I can’t be at the Whistler Bike Park. I enjoy watching my Bay Area sports teams and a good cooperative video game with my buddies. Otherwise you might find me on a golf course, perhaps Corica Park, Poppy Ridge, or Pasatiempo.
